These two bricks are “1 split” fire or refractory
bricks (4.5x9x1.5 in). A good source would be
ceramic supply, ceramist who builds own kilns
(big volume), large masonry distributor, etc. DO
NOT USE regular brick. Here’s why - moisture.
House bricks act like a sponge and absorb a
bit of moisture out of the air. When you solder
you are intensely heating a small area of the
brick, too. Water trapped in the brick becomes
steam and little bits of brick can pop from the
surface. Picture in your mind popcorn popping.
Not much fun if you have your face nearby.
